He averaged 19.6 points and 7.4 assists in his remaining 28 games, leading the Bucks in scoring and assists during a six-game first-round playoff loss to the New Jersey Nets. His next chapter brought him to the Los Angeles Lakers for the 2003–04 season alongside Karl Malone, where he started all 82 games but struggled with Phil Jackson's triangle offense. After falling short in the Finals against Detroit, Payton was traded to the Boston Celtics before being waived and re-signed by them later that year. His career culminated in Miami, where he signed a one-year contract in September 2005.
